Nobody I Knew Will Ever Read This

Nobody I Knew Will Ever Read This

because it’s made of poetry;
because it has no proper rhymes,

because the lines don’t travel all the way
to the far side of the page.
Because the things it has to say
might be too embarrassing,
too
personal. Because it is free
from numbered clauses, short on bullet points;
o
f pie-charts, moving averages,
distressingly bereft. Because it’s left
aligned, not justified, and not designed
to be digested down to Powerpoint slides
for senior execs who don’t have time
or much of an attention span. Corporate Man
has no respect for poetry. It’s too
right-brain, and quite unlike
the careful analytical reports I used to write.
Come to think of it, nobody I knew
ever read those either.

  1. I knew you… I recognise the Corporate Man and even recognise the desk!! Must have de-corporatised enough to use my left brain again and to recognise I don’t want to be more like them (reference to GROUPTHINK)! Look forward to seeing more…

  2. Great to hear from you, Diana, and hope all is going well for you! This poem started as wondering why lots of intelligent people never read poetry, and then it acquired a corporate patina. I got the feeling that a lot of words used to get bandied around but very few things got communicated.
